Wren, Christopher
(1632–1723)
   Architect and Scientist.
   Wren was the son of a clergyman and he was educated at the University of Oxford. He became Professor of Astronomy at the university as well as a founder member of the Royal Society. Today, however, he is remembered as an architect. After the Great Fire of London in 1666, he was commissioned to undertake much of the rebuilding. Altogether he designed fifty-two churches, thirty-six company halls and several other public buildings. His greatest achievement was his plan for the magnificent Cathedral of St Paul’s which was built under his supervision. This still stands today and is generally perceived as the heart of the City of London.
